Post Brass Devil mission | Text

[ A day after they're back at the station once they're retrieved the second orb. This is the first time Peter talks to Viveca, and he's not fully sure how to address her so...he aims for casual politeness. ]

Ey, ma'am. I've got a few questions now that we're back and, miraculously, none of us has died.

Who's the bearded guy hiding on the North Wing of the station? Because I'm [ this ] close to call him Gandalf, being al magically mysterious and the like.

[ it is a distinctly human voice that answers him. ]

Ma'am, huh? Aren't you sweet. [ she sounds somewhat amused, there. ]

"The bearded guy", as you put it, is the commander of this station. He's not hiding, he's recruiting new members for the team and taking care of the orbs. You know, so their power is contained. [ then, after a pause, ] Sure, call him Gandalf, why not. I'm pretty sure he'd get a kick out of that.

[ somehow, she manages to sound both exasperated and incredibly fond at once. the "commander" is a bit of a personality, apparently. ]

[ Very nice. ]

Why, thank you. Should I call you miss, instead? I wasn't sure.

Ohhh, gotcha. I'm still pretty new here, I wasn't familiar with him, my bad. It's good to know he might have a sense of humor. But if he doesn't mind sharing his real name, I'll be able to address him properly.

[ Peter likes people with personality, and he's used to hanging out with odd people. All the Guardians are like that, him included. ]

I see that he's hard at work. Is that why none of us can access the north wing? Doesn't he get lonely? Perhaps he would like to chat.

And do all the orbs talk? I missed the first mission.

Ha, that works... or just Viveca. As long as it's not a terrible nickname, you're good.

[ clearly coming from someone who's been subjected to terrible nicknames before. ]

He will, I'm sure. I'd tell you, but honestly... [ a sigh. and then, a begrudging admission, ] I lost a bet. So for a month longer, I have to refer to him as "commander" when talking to others.

[ that. that's the reason no one knows his name so far. ]

Yes, it's currently too dangerous for you to go in, you might disrupt the containment wards by accident. [ a pause, and then she just — laughs. outright, bubbling laughter. ] Oh, please, trust me, once you get him to talk, he'll never shut up.

[ for his last question: ] They can, yes, if they want. Think of the individual orbs as parts of a larger entity. They speak when they form contracts, and they can talk to your conscious or subconscious mind. That's usually how they're found — they make sure people find them... and use them.

[ Peter switches to voice, so she can hear his amusement too. ]

I like to be on a first name basis, you can call me just Peter too. What about Viv? It's not a bad nickname. There's also...hm, something like The Secret Holder or the Mysterious Cyber Queen...but Viv is shorter.

[ Mr. Star-Lord here is the best at nicknames, can you tell? ]

A bet. [ Peter sounds slightly disbelieving of that, but he's willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. ] Alright! I'll ask again in a month, see how that goes. I like games too, we should play one day. Have you ever play two truths and a lie?

[ He's curious about if A.Is. like her are advanced enough to be able to lie at all. His best guess is yes, but it can't hurt to test it. ]

Containment wards, that sounds bad. You're not keeping zombies or anything like that there, I hope. [ Given all their luck, he thinks it's a fair question. That said, he likes the sound of her laugh. ] I like chatty people, Im sure we will be fine if we ever get to talk then.

Ah, I see. [ There's a brief pause as Peter seems to be considering something before he adds. ] Okay, full disclosure here, that's worrying. We're dealing with live entities, parts of a whole that claims it wants to be completed, right? But what exactly it is? The orbs alone seem to be insanely powerful. How do we know that once all of them are collected, that won't mean the end of all realities as we know it? I've dealt with three galaxy destroying events in my life already, and three might not sound like a big number, but it's already two too many.

[ He needs some peace of mind, Viv. ]

You're not the first one to use that... it's fine. Viv will do.

[ that's the one nickname she doesn't actually mind too much. ]

No zombies, just orbs. [ and speaking of... ] I understand why you're worried about that, Peter. The infinity stones would make anyone who's seen them worried. But the Orb — the real Orb, the pieces of which are now scattered across the different universes... its only purpose is to cause chaos, wherever it is. This station has been built with one purpose: to contain it here, exactly so that it won't end all realities as we know them.

I know it's hard to trust an AI and a man you've not met, but... please, trust me when I say you're working to prevent reality-shattering events by doing this, not causing them.

Okay, great. Thanks, Viv.

No Zombies are always good news. [ He should have expected her to know about the Infinity Stones, there are different people from his universe here, but Viveca bringing that up still catches him off guard. It actually startles Peter, but he tries to keep his voice level. Years of keeping a good poker face helps. ]

I don't mind you being an A.I., that has never been an issue, promise. [ That is an honest statement, he's met other robots with advanced intelligence before, and he knows that the Kree empire is ruled by one who embodies the empire's greatest minds. They're people to him, just like everyone else. ]

The thing about trust is that it needs to be earned, it's not something that can be forced, even if I wanted to. You've been nothing but helpful, and there are people here who are alive thanks to whatever power powers brought us to this station. Someone who has the power to gamble with life and death is someone I better not piss off. I do want to believe that we're working to help people, not hurting them...but absolute power corrupts absolutely. What if once we collect all the orbs, their power is too strong to be contained? What if the Commander decided that he could use them instead of restraining them?

If you know about the Infinite Stones, you might know about Thanso and my father, father and how that ended. I don't want a repeat, enough people have suffered already.

I know. All we can do is keep earning it.

[ she doesn't sound begrudging at all — it's understandable. she can't make them trust them... it has to happen naturally. ]

Peter, I understand. You're wise, to not want a repeat of that. But that's why the orbs are contained — so they can't talk to any of you, and try to corrupt you. As for the Commander... he's the last person who would ever use them.

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2021-10-17 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That goes both ways, too. I know we also have to prove that bringing us here was worth it.

[ He wasn't trying to berate her or anything, just bringing up the worries that him and other people are having. He lets out a small chuckle at that, as if he can't help himself. ]

Wise isn't something I get called often, but thanks for understanding. Did he also lost someone, or something important?
vivecai: (12)

[personal profile] vivecai 2021-10-20 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
... you could say that.

[ her tone makes it clear it's not a topic she's going to say anything more of, though. ]
spacedisaster: (O: !!!)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2021-10-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm.

[ Oh, Peter gets it. He's way too familiar with big loses. And so, he won't press the issue. ]

Did he make you to be less lonely, then?
vivecai: (04)

[personal profile] vivecai 2021-10-20 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, he didn't make me. I made myself.

[ again, there's something in her tone that says she's not going to elaborate or offer more insight into this... but the confidence with which she says it shows she's serious. ]
spacedisaster: (I hear trouble)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2021-10-20 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Very interesting then.

[ Again, that tone of dismissal intermingled with one of certainty. It's hard to argue with these sorts of replies, and Peter figures the subjects isn't up to discussion anyway. Fair enough, maybe if they get to know each other better in the future he can ask again. ]

All right then, thank you for answering my questions, Viv. I won't bother you more today.
