It's a reasonable conclusion to come to considering! I thought I should double check with you. I don't know anything about law, let alone space law [that's definitely not a thing] but I bet if we supplied Itachi with enough law books, he'd be a very scary lawyer.

I think if we supplied Itachi with enough books about anything at all, he'd make a scary whatever-the-book-was-about, [ she counters wryly (but undeniably fondly). ]

Which I could say about you, too... though maybe not about lawyering.

Are you suggesting I'm anything less than excellent at diplomacy? It can't be the arguing because we both know I am very good at that.

I mostly thought about the fact that sometimes lawyers end up defending those who are guilty, or accusing those who are not.

[Rationally speaking, he could have drawn that conclusion even with how little he knows about litigation, but he didn't and his righteous horror is palpable.]

You're right, I couldn't be a lawyer! No one should be a lawyer! [He huffs in indignance, shaking his head though she can't see it.]

I wouldn't have been able to stand seeing someone innocent face punishment either. [He snorts softly.]

Anyway, I think if things hadn't gone the way they had, I'd have been perfectly happy to continue teaching the younger disciples all my life. They were very cute. Sometimes so dumb, but still cute. [Despite the insult, it's all said in fondness. What child or teenager isn't a little dumb sometimes?]

What about you, Miss Viveca? Was there ever a profession you were drawn to? [Even as he asks, he wonders if she'd had that kind of freedom growing up on E23-b. Maybe she hadn't thought of anything else but fighting against the injustices of her own world.]

No, you wouldn't, [ she repeats with a softer tone, quieter — she rarely refers to events that those here have gone through, but she does know all of it... and it's likely not a terrible surprise that she approves of much of wei wuxian's actions back in his home. ]

I think any young disciple would be lucky, to have such a good teacher. [ is she stalling? maybe, but eventually she sighs. ]

Ever since I was young, my parents wanted me to follow them into politics. It's customary in our world that the current mayor takes on an apprentice, who eventually succeeds them. [ dryly: ] I think that went a little differently for my father than he expected it to.

[Though it hasn't dimmed his love for teaching (especially teaching young ones) he'll always feel responsible for not being able to save the Yunmeng disciples from their fate. He isn't sure "good teacher" applies to him. He bows his head at the compliment and then moves on without response.

From the sounds of it, politics isn't what she wanted to do, though he supposes sometimes when the choice is out of your hands, it's more harmful than helpful to wonder at anything else. Not that she'd ended up following that path anyway.

He lets out a soft snort.] Just a little.

You're too good to be a politician anyway. Even the best of them end up compromising on doing what's right. [The name "Lan Xichen" doesn't leave his mouth, and he wonders if she knows it's who he's thinking of regardless.]
