I am, uh... one of the new guys, yes. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me.

I heard from one of the people who have been here for some time that they once had access to the North Wing, which I believe is where the orbs that have been collected previously are being kept, as well as your personal residence. I don't mean to invade on your privacy, but if you'd be willing on some occasion, I'd like the same opportunity to explore this area of the station.

[stationmaster]

Can't say I was expecting that. [ his place is a mess. there are instruments everywhere. pages of notes and scribbles (yeah, he'll always prefer analogue over anything.) ] You just get here and before you get comfy in your room, and the kitchen, and meet your fellow crew-mates, you want to see the North Wing, huh?

And can I ask why the urgency?

[ Castiel is, unfortunately, used to making missteps where common courtesy is concerned. ]

I apologize. I hadn't realized it would be considered an unexpected request. I've already explored the rest of the station that I have access to. However, there is some kind of spell or warding applied to the exterior of the station and your wing, leaving me unable to fly there directly. Hence my request for your permission.

[stationmaster]

Uh-huh. There's a pretty good reason for that, too.

[ the security; the warding magic. ]

It's for your own safety and mine and Viv's that we limit the free access to the things that thrive off of chaos and manipulation. [ hence those security measures keeping him from just flying in. ] I can arrange a visit, if that's what you want, but I'm gonna recommend you go through a mission or two before you do. So you get a better idea of what this whole place and what we do is about.

Besides ... if I'm gonna be having guests, I'll need to do some clean-up.

[ The security of the orbs is paramount, so it makes sense to keep them protected. It also makes sense that the ship's captain would want to observe him prior. The request isn't unreasonable, so it's easy for Castiel to agree. ]

Of course. Before I relieve you of this conversation, I do have one more question. These orbs... It's my understanding that they're pieces of a larger being. Do you have any idea how many pieces still remain to be found, and any name or similar information regarding the being we're reassembling?

[ If it sounds like Castiel is suspicious as hell about the "orb," it's because he is. Something powerful enough to split universes into alternate timelines while claiming itself to be an entity of chaos is inherently dangerous, to say the least. ]

[ glad he's being agreeable about it. not many would. of course, degar wouldn't kowtow to anything otherwise, what with being the commander of this station and all. he takes his job very seriously. ]

It's not the first time I've been asked about the pieces, and unfortunately the answer's still gonna be the same: we just don't know. When the big guy broke apart, it split across the multiverse but we've got no way of telling how many pieces it split into.

Unfortunately I ... don't really know what you mean by a name. Like, are we putting 'Humpty Dumpty' back together again? I guess we could give it a name if we wanted to. Could even call it Humpty Dumpty. [ oh boy the orb would like that, wouldn't it? ] I use the term 'big guy' really loosely, it won't actually be a guy.

[ His dedication to his position is admirable. That's a quality many fathers leaders lack.

There's hesitance and quiet to Castiel's voice, as if he's thinking out loud. ]

If there's some kind of chaotic energy signature to the orbs, there may be a way to track and number the remaining pieces.

[ But that would be a very large, complicated project likely requiring rare materials and a strong power source, so Castiel isn't surprised to hear that the remaining number of pieces is currently unknown. And since Degar doesn't know the being's true name, "Humpty Dumpty" it is, even though Castiel, predictably, doesn't get the reference.

He's promised only the one question, though, so when his voice lifts and strengthens, it's a dismissal. ]

[ it's pretty funny though, right? humpty dumpty. ]

Believe me, if we had a way, we'd have done it by now.

[ and he sounds a little frustrated about that, too. but what they've got ... well, it works. it's a little slower, but it works.

the cheerful tone in his voice returns quickly enough anyway. ]
