There's ... gonna be times when you've got to balance helping a planet you're assigned to with why we're here at all. [ the orbs. their regrets. ] And it's not always going to be easy.

Sorry. I wish I had any advice or something a little more helpful to say.

That's the shitty part of the gig, right, especially when you care.

[ A soft huff. Dry, and not really amusement. But Sam's trying to keep it light despite the topic. ]

I've found that usually, all you can do is your best. And tryna do what's right often means not getting to do what's easy. And often it also means failing your way forwards.

[ Progress, helping people... it's never easy, it's never smooth sailing. Something always goes wrong, someone always gets hurt underfoot. Sam's not naive to that reality. Now if only that made it hurt less every time it happens. ]

I've found that's generally the downside of caring, yeah.

You know, when I met the previous Captain America I asked him almost the same damn thing.

[ Steve just whipping out a motivational speech on the spot, and Sam slightly in disbelief that it wasn't prewritten. Though who knows - maybe Steve just kept a notebook of those and practiced them in the mirror. ]

Maybe it's the shield. You wanna hold it some time, see if it inspires any spontaneous words of wisdom and motivation?

I'll admit I'm not much of a shield-and-or-sword kinda guy, but for spontaneous words of wisdom and motivation? I'm willing to give it a go.

That's the spirit, man. I'm telling you, it's all about the vibe. Plus if nothing else, after using it as a shield for speech purposes, it makes for a pretty decent salad bowl.

[ And for a sled on wooden stairs. Which Sam's nephews may or may not have discovered. He's not mad about it, truth be told. ]

Just don't go throwing it. This thing has elected not to be too closely acquainted with physics.

I do like a good salad. Especially when you add a little fruit? Little orange slices or the berries?

But maybe on second thought I shouldn't be handling any shields, even if they make for impressive salad bowls. I'm not really much of a weapons guy.
